English Language Arts



Grammar and Composition:
The Language Arts program is designed to build and strengthen both written and verbal communication skills. The writing process is taught, modeled, and reinforced.  Creativity is encouraged, and students are taught how to apply the rules of proper grammar to their writing and speech.

Students write in a variety of genres including “informative/explanatory texts” that examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content, and “argument” that supports claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.

Reading and Literature:
Individual, and small and large group activities and discussions are designed to develop and enhance reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.  In addition to reading novels throughout the school year, the students also read selections from other major literary genres (nonfiction, poetry, drama, etc.). Students are taught to analyze selections for theme(s), plot, setting, and other literary components. Students cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. The students are given a weekly spelling test and a bi-weekly vocabulary test.
